WAVEFORM LAMP

Red acrylic, silver leaf, and PETG plastic.

The WaveForm Lamp garners inspiration from natural forms such as aurora borealis, and -as the name implies- waves. I was looking at mixing the curved and soft forms of waves with a light source that would be in the same sort of sense soft and melodious; pastel colors immediately came to mind.

I started to look more closely into the wave and I started to think about its short lifespan. When a wave is forming, or moving it creates the soft form I was originally inspired by, but the wave finally crashes it can be violent and chaotic. Hence to represent this I decided that the light source had to be harsher, and by doing so I was trying to create a juxtaposition that would symbolize the life and death of a wave

MAKING:

I started by making sketches that evoked my main idea of melodious and natural forms, in some I tried to implement the harshness through straight angular lines. Then I started to illustrate the basic shape I chose over the rest. I made a rough cardboard mock-up of what the lamp would look this allowed me to have a better idea of the dimensions. Afterward, I started working on the facade, I decided to use foam as it would grant me the best opportunity at making the 3D form I was thinking of. A more stylized and detailed mock-up model was done, to check how the lighting source would fit as well as all the pieces. The foam models were vacuum formed and the result was silver leafed. The rest of the body of the lamp was laser cut out of red acrylic
