THE IDEAL SELF LAMP (or a mirror that does not look back).

DSCF0135.JPG

a NARCISSISTIC EXPRESSION OF MYSELF.

A mirror that does not look back. An idealized self-portrait

shape.

The form of the lamp resembles the block of material that a sculptor subtracts from to create a figure.

This form that contains a rendition of myself is also closely related to display cases. These hold -and elevate- our most precious objects, all while exposing them to the outside eye. The notion of elevating an object through preserving and displaying it closely relates back to idea of an idealistic self-portrait.

Bathed in red

red.

This color has many connotations from love to wrath. kandinsky argued that red could symbolize, youth, RESTLESSNESS, passion and strength, he also compared the color to the sound made from a trumpet. All these connotations provided by kandinsky not only suit the characteristics of a perfect self, but also -similarly to the trumpet- creates a loud object. This is why red is so alluring to me. My relationship with this color is a tricky one, i SHOULDN'T be able to fully recognize red since iā€™m colorblind and yet it has my unconditional love.

a mirror that does not look back.

It was not my intention for the head to look back at ITSELF through the reflection in the acrylic. NEVERTHELESS, I think this accidental OCCURRENCE is rather poetical. I always thought of self-portraits almost as mirrors of oneself, but this head, this face -and the meaning behind it- is so highly IDOLIZED, to the point where the self-portrait itself does not recognize its creator. This self-portrait, which was conceived out of narcissism, stares back at itself in a loop, forever.
